The Kenya National Social Security Fund (NSSF) launched the Haba Haba Savings Plan on 30 October 2024 to include individuals in the informal sector. The Informal sector comprises small businesses owned by individuals who work and earn but are not subjected to compulsory government deductions. The Haba Haba Savings Plan is managed by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), a government institution under the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection.

What is Haba Haba?
Haba Haba is a savings plan designed for individuals working in the informal sector. The social security savings plan is managed by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), a government institution under the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection.
Who Can Join Haba Haba?
Any Kenyan or refugee who is 18 years old or above and holds a valid national ID or Refugee ID. If you do not have a valid Refugee ID, visit the nearest Department of Refugee Services (DRS) office to apply for or renew your ID. There is no upper age limit for joining Haba Haba.
What are some of the economic benefits of joining the NSSF Haba Haba saving plan?
To access the benefits of the NSSF Haba Haba savings plan, you will need to provide a valid M-Pesa number, or a bank account registered in your name. Please visit any Huduma Centre or nearest NSSF office with your National or Refugee ID and NSSF card and apply for a withdrawal of your savings.
- Withdrawal and Retirement Benefits: You can withdraw 50% of your savings after 5 years of consistent contributions and not less than Ksh 4,800 annually. Withdraw the remaining 50% as a single payment upon reaching 50 years of age or above. Requirements: NSSF card, national/refugee ID.
- Disability Benefit: You can receive your total savings if permanently incapacitated by disease or accident. Requirements: NSSF card, national/refugee ID, medical board certificate.
- Emigration Benefit: Receive your total savings upon permanent migration out of Kenya. Requirements: NSSF card, refugee ID, exit document issued by DRS and Voluntary Repatriation (Volrep) Request Form (VRF) generated by UNHCR and stamped by the immigration office.
- Survivors’ Benefit: Upon the member’s death, the total savings amount will be paid to dependents, prioritizing spouse(s) and children, parents, siblings, or guardians. Requirements: Proof of death, proof of relationship, and claimant’s ID.
How can I register for the NSSF Haba Haba saving plan as a refugee in Kenya?

There are two ways of registering into the NSSF Haba Haba program. The two options of registering can also be used by Kenyans who want to be part of the Haba Haba retirement savings plan.
1. In-Person Registration: Visit a Huduma Centre or the nearest NSSF office for assistance with registration. You will need your Refugee or National ID, and a Ksh 200 contribution.
2. Mobile Registration: Dial *303# on your phone and follow the instructions. A Ksh 200 contribution and ID are required at the time of registration. If there is a change in your personal information or next of kin, visit the nearest NSSF office with evidence and a letter from DRS for your details to be updated.
What if I have already registered with NSSF?
If you have already registered with NSSF or Haba Haba, you DO NOT need to register again. If you have lost your NSSF card simply visit any NSSF office near you with your ID to request a replacement card. A fee of Ksh 200 will apply for the replacement of lost cards.
What are the savings and contribution requirements?
Minimum contribution: Ksh 400 per month. Alternatively, you can pay Ksh 25 per day. Ensure you contribute at least Ksh 400 each month to qualify for short-term withdrawals after 5 years. There are no penalties for missing minimum payments, but if you don’t pay at least Ksh 400 monthly or kshs 4,800 per year, you won’t make short-term withdrawals after 5 years.
How do I make payment to my NSSF Haba Haba account?

- Enter Paybill Number: 222222
- Enter NSSFV- followed by your NSSF number, as follows: NSSFV-123456789
- Enter the amount and Pin when prompted and complete payment.
- You will receive notification confirming the payment
Pay online
- Click on the NSSF E-service link and follow the instructions: https://nssfdigital.enssf.co.ke/home.
- Click “Self Service” and select “Voluntary Contribution”
- Enter your NSSF member number, validate and follow the steps.
How to check and track NSSF Haba Haba savings?
To check your savings, dial *303# and follow the prompt or visit any Huduma Centre or NSSF office near you for assistance on your Haba Haba account balances.
How will I get paid by Haba Haba?
You will receive your total savings plus the interests earned (the investment return is declared by NSSF). Money will be paid via M-Pesa through your registered mobile number or directly to your bank account.
